Because of its beauty Vieste – the city of Venus – is also called the Pearl of the Gargano. Situated on a white rocky promontory the charming seaside village seems to plunge into the sea. Next to the town there are two large sandy beaches. Erosion by water and wind shaped the calcareous rock into an enchanting landscape of bays, islets and cliffs. Vieste’s most famous landmark, the “Pizzomunno”, is a vertical rocky monolith on the beach in front of the hotel. According to the legend Pizzomunno was a fisherman who turned into a rock because of the loss of “Vieste”, who was a beautiful girl with golden hair dragged into the sea by the sirens that were so jealous of her beauty.
